Review Wednesday: Cats in Paris, An Adult Coloring Book by Won-Sun Jang

6 This gorgeously illustrated adult coloring book draws readers into the secret world of cats in Paris as they explore the city’s most famous (and feline-friendly) spots.

Say bonjour to the cats of Paris as they slink through its fabled streets and alleyways, from Montmartre to the Shakespeare and Company bookshop and into a feline-filled land of playful imagination. Featuring intricate pen-and-ink drawings of tabbies, Persians, Siamese, and more, this evocative coloring book’s frisky kitties lie in wait for your colorful stylings.

Overall, Cats in Paris is a cute and enjoyable coloring book. Everyone tends to have vastly different opinions when it comes to art and this book certainly has something for everyone! Unfortunately, there were some things that weren’t completely satisfying. In my review, I hope to lay out everything so that you’re given enough information to form your own opinion.

The Basics:
The images are printed on both sides of thick paper.
You can color with markers to your heart’s content! There is NO bleed through.
Pages are NOT perforated.
Images move into the spine of the book, making it difficult to color.
I still found it best to insert blank paper underneath the page I’m coloring. The pressure I put on the page imprints the blank ink on the page below it.

The Images:
As mentioned, there is something for everyone here in this collection. You’ll find scenes, busy patterns, whimsical prints, camouflaged images, two-paged layouts, and prints with lots of blank space.
One of the disappointments for me is the lack of Paris influence in the majority of the book. There is also a lot of black shading used throughout the book that takes some of the coloring fun out of the page.  A few of the graphics seem too sloppy or nearly impossible to color. And a few others, such as a two-page layout of paw prints, seem wasteful.
In spite of a number of images that didn’t make the cut for me, Cats in Paris has a certain charm to it that makes for an enjoyable afternoon. I’m giving it 4 out of 5 stars.
