Review Wednesday: At Every Turn by Anne Mateer

11She’s off to the races!
Caught up in a whirlwind of religious enthusiasm, Alyce Benson impetuously pledges three thousand dollars to mission work in Africa. Now she just has to find a way to get the money.
Alyce harbors a secret passion for speed and automobiles, and she’s spent many an afternoon driving around the rustic track in the field behind her home. When she discovers that her father’s company has sponsored a racing car that will compete in several upcoming events–races in which the driver will be paid and could win as much as five thousand dollars in prize money–she conspires with her father’s mechanic, Webster, to train and compete.
But when her friends cast aspersions on Webster’s past, she realizes she may have trusted the wrong person with her secret. Will Alyce come up with the money in time, or will she have to choose between her hasty promise and the man who holds a piece of her heart?

Anne Mateer has officially made it to my favorite author list!! At Every Turn is a beautiful example of what makes her so great. She has a smooth style of storytelling that can only be admired.

What I Loved: I enjoyed the quirky heroine, Alyce Benson. She was sweet, giving, and determined. She had such a heart for missionary work that it was so easy to stand along side of her and root for her the entire time.
The story is told through the first person so the reader is left to guess and determine the motives of those around her just as Alyce is doing.
The racing enthusiast will enjoy this story of a woman determined to race in man’s world. While NASCAR holds no interest for me, I was able to fully enjoy the novel. There was enough historical information on racing to wet the appetite of those that enjoy it, but not too much to bore those that don’t.
The spiritual message was well done and brings to life themes of forgiveness, serving Christ in the way that God created you to, benevolence, and how to be an effective witness.

Rating and Recommendations: I highly recommend At Every Turn for those that enjoy a solid Christian Historical Fiction and happily give it five stars.
