Christian Horseback Librarian Reads

For readers, a horseback librarian is something of a hero, so it’s surprising that there aren’t more fiction books written on the subject.
Search around and you’ll dig up a few nonfiction titles, a couple things written for children, and even some general fiction titles. But I’m going to bring you some from the Christian fiction shelves.

If you’re new to the idea, here’s a lightning-fast history lesson:
Horseback Librarians, or pack horse librarians, were primarily women. The job was created during the Great Depression as an answer to two problems: jobs and illiteracy. This librarian program served secluded mountain areas.
These are their stories …

Wonderland Creek by Lynn Austin
I had to start with my first introduction to the topic. This is a fabulous read. I found it funny, educational, and quite the page-turner.

Along a Storied Trail by Ann H. Gabhart
I haven’t read this one yet, but it was a finalist in the Selah Historical Romance category this year.

The Librarian of Boone’s Hollow by Kim Vogel Sawyer
This one is such a sweet, tender romance, and another great example of the subject.

The Librarian’s Journey
I haven’t read this one yet either but I’m eager to get my hands on a copy. I love that there are multiple stories and different locations to explore.

Librarians of Willow Hollow
Is it okay to be biased here and say that this is my favorite? I collaborated with 3 other Christian authors on this one. We chose to tell a story from the four librarians of Willow Hollow. All of the stories are strongly Christ-centered, but mine is the only romance.

Have you heard of horseback librarians before? Do you have any other titles to share with me?

And for a bit of fun, share your horseback librarian name with me! Mine would be Mary of Mariposa Route.

  1. I’ve read all of your recommendations except Wonderland Creek and The Librarian’s Journey. I will definitely be looking for both. My Pack Horse Librarian name is Carol of Thunder River.

  2. Apparently I’m Helen of Chicken Range 🤣 I hadn’t heard of The Librarian’s Journey, so I am eager to look into it! Each of the Willow Hollow books were so good.
